INDUSTRIAL GASES

OXYGEN

Oxygen is used in medicine for therapeutic purposes and in the metals industry for steel making and metal-cutting applications. In the chemical and petroleum industries, oxygen is used in the production of a wide variety of fuels and chemicals. It is used also in the pulp and paper industry for a variety of applications, including pulp bleaching, black liquor oxidation, and lime kiln enrichment. In the glass industry, oxygen/fuel combustion is used to reduce particulate and NO_xemissions in melting operations.

ACETYLENE

Acetylene used in optical spectrometry as an instrumentation gas; in atomic absorption for elemental analysis as an instrumentation gas; and it's also used as a fuel gas in atomic absorption spectrometry for elemental analysis. When burnt in oxygen, acetylene produces an intensely hot flame. This oxy-acetylene flame is used for cutting and welding materials.

ARGON

Argon is used primarily for its properties as an inert gas in applications such as arc welding, steel making, heat treating, and electronics manufacturing. Argon 5.0 high grade is used for stainless steel welding, as well as laboratory applications.

CARBON DIOXIDE

Carbon dioxide is used extensively as a fire extinguisher, as a shielding gas in arc welding, and in some medical applications. Its main use, however, is for carbonating soft drinks and other sparkling beverages.

NITROGEN

Gaseous nitrogen is used in the chemical and petroleum industries for storage tank blanketing and vessel inerting applications. It's also used extensively by the electronics and metals industries for its inert properties. Liquid nitrogen, produced by the cryogenic air separation process, finds wide use as a refrigerant in applications such as cryogenic grinding of plastics and food freezing. Nitrogen is used for blanketing and purging (removing oxygen) equipment, vessels and pipelines

HELIUM

Helium is widely used as an inert gas in the arc welding process. It's used in pipes and vessels leakage testing. Helium is also used as a carrier gas for gas chromatography. Its low specific gravity and non-flammability allow its use in lighter-than-air applications such as the filling of balloons and blimps. Mixtures of helium and oxygen are used as a breathing gas for deep-sea diving. Liquid helium is used in super conducting magnet applications, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It is used also for laboratory applications.

HYDROGEN

Hydrogen has a wide range of applications, from the hydrogenation of vegetables and animal oils and fats, to the synthesis of ammonia and petroleum refining operations, as well as a source of energy. Hydrogen is one of the materials now being considered as an alternative fuel because it is renewable, abundant, efficient, and unlike other alternatives, produces zero emissions. Many believe that this versatile material will become a primary fuel and energy carrier of the future. It's used also for laboratory applications.

The Special Gases Group has a wealth of experience in producing a wide range of gas mixtures. Whether the customer requires a mixture to play a physical or chemical role in a production process, or a high accuracy calibration gas mixture for an analytical application, APEX has the capability and expertise to supply it. Gas Mixtures are offered in a wide range of cylinder sizes. (Examples: Argon/CO₂; Helium/Oxygen; Oxygen/Nitrogen; etc.)
